Blockchain data shows that recently, optimistically an unexpected recipient of 20 million OP tokens sent 1 million of those tokens to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
- According to Blockchain Security Firm peckshieldThe exploiter’s network address sent 1,000,000 OP to an address previously established as belonging to Vitalik.
- The fund is valued at approximately $874,000 at the time of writing. This comes as the exploiter had already sold 1 million tokens prior to the Vitalik transaction.
- In addition, the exploiter handed over the voting rights for the tokens sent to Yoav Weiss – a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation. Vitalik previously handed over around 1700 tokens to a single person.
- Optimism recently completed its airdrop of OP Token, providing OP with the earliest and most dedicated users of the Layer 2 network. More than 50% of eligible addresses have now claimed their tokens.
- On Wednesday, Optimism intended to send 20 million OPs to crypto market maker Wintermute. However, a transactional fault at the end of Wintermute involving Layer 2 complications caused them to lose access to the token.
- An attacker claimed the OP shortly afterwards, and attempts to communicate with both optimism and wintermute were to no avail.
- Wintermute has taken full responsibility for the matter and even said they were impressed by the attacker’s performance.
